UK 3G Operators Win Tie-Up Approval

T-Mobile and mmO2 in the UK have been given permission to share their 3G networks in some cities throughout the UK (not the larger ones), in order to provide faster rollout of 3G offerings. I don’t know many of the details (and perhaps someone in the UK can correct me, if I’m wrong), but it sounds like similar roaming arrangements in the US – which have been helpful for carriers to increase their coverage. While competition is useful in forcing companies to develop the best service, there are clearly some inefficiencies in having multiple carriers rebuild the same coverage levels across entire nations – only to wait to discover later on which one “wins”.
