FTC Targeting Auction Fraud

from the got-their-hands-full,-don't-they dept

The FTC is really focusing on online scams these days. They’ve stepped up their efforts against spam recently, and now they’re starting to go after auction fraud. They’re working with local law enforcement agencies across the country to specifically go after online auction scammers. Since most of the scams occur on eBay, they’re also working with folks there – who have proven to be extra friendly in response to requests from law enforcement. The FTC says that some of the scams are getting more sophisticated – including one scammer who tried to pin his crimes on people he didn’t like, by stealing their identity, and then opening the bank accounts and PO boxes used for the frauds in their names. They’re also starting to go after those who put up fake escrow sites.
