Wi-Fi Hotspots Go Live In Downtown NYC

As people over in the UK complain about efforts to set up public WiFi hotspots, New York City is excitedly announcing that the first of its new WiFi hotspot zones are live. The contrast between the two articles is almost stunning. In the UK they’re worried about all the problems this will cause. In NYC, they’re excited about all the opportunities this will bring. They also say the right things in response to questions of whether or not they’re competing with T-Mobile and other commercial hotspot providers – pointing out that they have a very different business model. They believe that offering free WiFi helps increase the value of a particular location, bringing in more people and/or business. It’s a differentiating factor.
