Portland Ponders WiFi

There have been plenty of towns and small cities that are experimenting with covering a small downtown area with WiFi, but now, the city of Portland is apparently thinking about covering all of Portland with WiFi. The article makes it clear that they’re in the very early stages of looking at this, and there are plenty of people who don’t think it’s a worthwhile plan. Proponents point out that it will help develop Portland as a good location for businesses to set up shop. Those against the plan say they don’t see what the big deal is, and that WiFi isn’t a “make or break” point for many companies. They’re underestimating the value of having a WiFi cloud covering the whole city. As we’ve pointed out before, WiFi is more than just the internet without wires – it lets people do things they never could do before, and opens up plenty of new possibilities.
