Benetton Adopts RFID Technology For Smart Labels

from the privacy-issues? dept

Benetton announced today that they’ve signed a deal with Philips to embed RFID tags into all of the clothes in their new Sisley line. While it’s been talked about for a while, this will be one of the larger RFID rollouts in consumer products. Gilette made news a few months back saying they’re going to use the technology to track how their products fly off the shelves at Walmart and Target. Benetton will use the technology for tracking clothes coming in the back of the store, as well as being able to automatically register sales and returns. There is still the privacy issue, and the Benetton article says that people are working on a standard that would allow consumers to deactivate any RFID tags once they’ve left the store.
