Artificial Stupidity, Part 2

from the the-split-in-the-AI-world dept

Following on Part 1 of Salon’s story about Hugh Loebner’s Turing test, and his ability to infuriate just about everyone, comes Part 2, which looks at the

deeper philosophical split in the artificial intelligence world (is it really AI if it just fools people or does it actually need to think?). The side that supports Turing tests say the split is only because the AI scientists simply can’t figure out how to beat a Turing test, and have thus been forced to change the rules. The article touches on some of the more interesting questions of what happens when people think and converse, but also includes a few more random bizarre stories about people involved (mostly unhappily) with the Loebner Prize.
