UK Government Bans Spreadsheets

from the they-did-what-now? dept

Not quite sure how this all works out, but according to this article, the UK government has banned the use of spreadsheet files. That’s right. The article isn’t exactly clear on what they’re banned from. Are they just banned from UK government websites, or are they banned completely? Sorry, no more budget projections here… Maybe it’s a sort of “retro” move to force people to stop relying on the technology. More likely, of course, is that it’s either a silly oversight, or some sort of weird, misunderstood vendetta against spreadsheets. Looking at the actual document (a Microsoft Word file), it seems to indicate that spreadsheets as hypertext or comma delimited files are okay (in other words taking out all the things that make spreadsheets worthwhile).
