John Perry Barlow: Cognitive Dissident
from the digital-cyberculture dept
An enlightening interview with John Perry Barlow, discussing plenty of the issues that come up around here these days. He points out how the Total Information Awareness program is almost comical, and how he thinks that the internet has been “counterproductive to peace” these days – which is not quite what you’d expect to hear from him. His argument is that too many people think that they can state their opinions on the internet, and then go back to their daily lives without doing anything else. So, while people may be upset about something, they don’t take any real action. He also thinks that the current “digital counterculture” needs a name that people can rally behind. On the whole, the interview makes him sound like an idealist who is coming to terms with reality.
