Exhibitionist Technology

from the gee-whiz-to-so-what dept

Museums are realizing that they’re competing against other entertainment options for attention, and thus are increasingly going high-tech in building their exhbitions. Of course, this also means that each exhibition is getting more expensive, while having a shorter shelf life. This also brings up the question of whether or not the technology itself is diverting attention from the actual purpose of the museums to teach people about whatever topic they’re trying to teach. Again, I think this goes back to what I was just talking about this morning with PowerPoint being used in classrooms: it all depends on how the technology is used.
