CTIA Emphasizes LNP For Consumers, Carriers

The wireless industry is dreading number portability. It won’t be cheap or easy to implement. But now they are putting a new spin on the issue. Exiting CTIA president Tom Wheeler has pledged to fight for consumers by making number portability a key priority for 2003. He wants to make sure that consumers can not only transfer wireless numbers to a new carrier but also transfer land line numbers. This is actually pretty clever because while number portability will certainly drive some churn, making it easy transfer land line numbers might help boost US wireless penetration. The only problem is that depending where you live going all wireless may not be practical.
