Operators Line Up for UMTS

Will 2003 be the year for UMTS? Research firms are torn (big surprise). EMC thinks that we’ll see networks launched through this year and then tapering off after Q1 2004, but admits the dates could get pushed back. The folks at Ovum are a bit more skeptical and don’t expect to see more than trials in 2003. While the delays are annoying, what’s more annoying is the carriers’ hype. Let’s just hope that when the services do launch they come close to delivering what was promised. The industry doesn’t need a repeat of the WAP debacle.
