New San Jose School Gives Every Student A Laptop

from the and-wireless... dept

Following all the stories about Maine’s program to give every seventh-grader a laptop, I was wondering when other states would follow suit. It seems that California is beginning to experiment with the idea as they’ve outfitted every student in a new high school with a laptop, and given them wireless connectivity in the school. The initial results have been very positive, though, they’re experiencing some of the same (somewhat expected) problems that the Maine program faced. Just because you give people the tools, it doesn’t mean they’re going to use them properly. So, there are clearly still some training issues to be worked out. However, as students get used to having a laptop with always on wireless connectivity, I’m wondering if that will help drive the Wi-Fi hotspot market. These kids are going to grow up and want hotspots everywhere they go.
