Sonera And Radiolinja Make First MMS Connection

Whether or not you believe that MMS is going to take off (and there’s been plenty of debate on that topic, it’s going to need to interconnect before anyone can really find out. One of the reasons that text messaging was so slow to take off in the US was that, for quite a while, users could only SMS with others using the same wireless carrier. Now, Finnish carriers Sonera and Radiolinja have agreed to make their MMS systems connect using technology from Nokia and Tecnomen. What amazes me is that it’s taken this long for carriers to make deals that let MMS messages travel cross-carrier. You would think, given the situation with SMS messaging, that they wouldn’t have bothered to launch an MMS offering without making sure that the technology would work with multiple carriers.
