Sony Acquires Ringtone Firm

Besides SMS the only other non-voice wireless service that makes any money is selling ringtones. Sony is the latest to bet big on the market by buying ringtone and picture messaging start-up Run Tones. Earlier this year Vivendi Universal made a similar move when it purchased ringtone provider Yourmobile. It seems that everyone form carriers to media companies see ringtones as the key to their salvation. Carriers are hoping ringtones will drive data revenues and media companies are trying to make up for slumping cd sales. But wouldn’t we all just be better off it everyone set their phones to vibrate?
