Making Software Usable

from the what-a-concept dept

Fortune has one of the better written articles (from a business perspective) about web services than I’ve seen in a long time. It does a pretty good job explaining what web services are, and how they can be helpful. It also spends a lot of time looking at what Microsoft is doing and, more importantly, why they’re such big believers in web services. While it may take away the proprietary “lock-in” nature of many current software products, it’s open nature has the ability to expand the overall opportunities for everyone – and Microsoft believes they’re well positioned to take advantage of those opportunities (actually, this is a lesson that Hollywood really needs to learn – that technology can threaten your business model, but still expand opportunities trememdously when embraced). Certainly a worthwhile read if you’re at all interested in the future of software.
