Why Are Online Personals Sites So Hot?
from the streamlined-dating dept
The founder of Nerve.com, who went on to create Spring Street Networks, the company that powers the many “branded” personals sites out there, has a short opinion piece on why online personals are so hot. He compares it to using the card catalog in the library instead of just wandering through the stacks. It’s an interesting analogy, and perhaps explains why (unlike many people I know) I still don’t like the concept of online dating. When I go to a bookstore, or a library I like wandering through the aisles to see what I find randomly. There’s a certain joy (and a lot less pressure) when you turn up something you never would have found otherwise. Of course, I think this opinion piece is (of course) designed to simply drive more people to a Spring Street site, because he makes sure to mention that a Victoria’s Secret model recently signed up for the service.

I think you missed his point
Not trying to be pro or con on dating sites but I think a better anaology would be that using a dating service is like going to a library or bookstore. A large community of people looking to date is the store. The search tools and being able to preview someone’s profile would probably be a better comparison to the card catalog
