Google CEO To Advertisers: Stop Scaring Users

from the seems-so-obvious dept

It’s a bit upsetting that this is newsworthy, but apparently most folks in the advertising and media world still haven’t grasped the concept that intrusive, annoying advertising doesn’t help sell anything – and is more likely to piss off users than anything else. Google’s CEO, Eric Schmidt, gave a keynote address today to advertisers telling them to stop alientating users. He’s quoted as saying: “My view of the world starts with the end user. It’s important the advertising model doesn’t scare the user.” It seems like such an obvious statement, but I’m afraid advertisers still think the answer is to go the other direction and become even more intrusive.
