Dear Chairman Powell
from the fixing-telecom dept
We’ve recently been discussing the different views of companies on both sides of the telecom deregulation debate. Now, a group of influential technologists have signed a letter to FCC Chairman Powell suggesting that he let the overbloated telecom companies that are failing fail already, so that we can get on with offering digital telephony. Clay Shirky has a short discussion of the letter on his mailing list that raises the bigger issues involved in the debate over whether we start moving to a world where voice is just another application on the network, or where it gets special treatment. Shirky suggests that this is a “transition from sail to steam” and the sailboat cartel isn’t happy about it.
