Still Waiting For Mobile Phones To Work With 911

from the long-wait dept

Nothing all that new in this Associated Press article, but it discusses the various problems that have occurred in getting the E-911 system setup. The FCC had set a timetable for having mobile phone carriers make it easier for police to locate 911 callers, but for a variety of reasons, the carriers have been slow to meet the scheduled times. The article does carry one interesting stat, which is that approximatley 50% of 911 calls are now from mobile phones, and that number is (not surprisingly) expected to rise. Now, I wonder what they’ll do about actually having people answer those calls. The two times I’ve had to call 911 in the past few years from my mobile phone (both after witnessing traffic accidents), I could not get through, as all operaters were “currently busy”.
