Jumping The Gun
The WCDMA camp got together this week in Paris for the UMTS Mobile Internet Conference. Everyone seems to be coming to grips with the reality of WDCMA/UMTS: the technology is just not ready. There are a number of issues that can only be resolved with time, the biggest issue being that vendors are implementing incompatible versions of the WCDMA spec. Forget all the hype and worries about consumer interest. The industry and governments needs to take a hard look at why 3G is stalling and come up with a plan to get back on track. While data is important, 2.5G technologies can probably meet most of the demand. Concentrate on increasing voice capacity in the short run to keep customers happy.
