A few years ago it was popular to talk about how there were going to be 10,000 different online marketplaces thriving in the “new economy”. Today, most of the 1,000 that did exist at one point or another have gone out of business. However, a few have thrived. eBay, LendingTree, Match.com and some others are all successful online marketplaces. Business 2.0 takes a look at what makes the successful online marketplaces different from the failures, such as Chemdex and Covisint. The rules seem pretty straightforward and obvious, but it seemed that most people starting up these companies didn’t recognize them.
