Tracking Terrorists The Las Vegas Way

from the terrorists-and-casino-cheats dept

Software that is currently used by casinos to help them catch cheaters may soon be used by the federal government to try to find suspected terrorists. The software seems to use all sorts of different technologies, combined with some fuzzy logic to flag certain connections that should be checked more thoroughly. While such things sound good in theory, I’m always worried about how well they actually work. They say this one uses face recognition (among many other things) – and time and time again face recognition has been shown not to work very well. The fear is that the software’s word starts being taken as clear proof of guilt – instead of simply a reason to investigate further.
