FCC Preparing To Approve Broadcast Flags To Prevent Digital Copying

from the fair-use,-schmair-use dept

On Thursday the FCC is supposedly going to approve regulations that would put anti-copying technology into digital TV receivers, which could take away some more of your fair use rights. The official announcement probably won’t come for a few days, but here’s yet another example of legislation, put together by industry with no input from consumers, that will make it illegal to do things that absolutely should not be illegal. There will be a period of public comment allowed after the decision is made, so hopefully enough people will scream loud enough. Unfortunately, because of the ridiculous and inaccurate language used both by the entertainment industry and the politicians involved (calling things “piracy” and “theft” when they really aren’t), many people won’t see the need to fight this ruling.
