A few weeks back with all the rumors of someone buying Voicestream/T-Mobile, the reasons for wireless industry consolidation got lost in the shuffle. This article in todays Mercury News does a great job of outlining the fire behind merger talks. The bottom line is that there are simply too many players all going after the same saturated market. This is pretty common in any new market and eventually the market will come down to three big players.
