The High Hurdles Facing Wi-Fi
WiFi’s continued growth isn’t all fun and games according to Business Week. There are serious questions concerning how well the technology will scale. While some have estimated that covering the US with WiFi hotspots would cost 10% of what the wireless carriers are paying to offer (slower) 3G technology, some are afraid that WiFi systems will quickly become overburdened. They say that one way to deal with this is to allocate more spectrum to WiFi, but various stakeholders (and the FCC) are unlikely to let that happen. Others are hopeful that technology solutions will let WiFi route around these problems and deal with the limited spectrum they have.
