Don't cc: People If You Want To Get A Response
from the bystander-non-intervention dept
It’s become fairly common among most people I know, when they feel the need to send out a “mass” email to a bunch of friends for some reason or another, to preface it with “sorry for the mass email…”. However, a new study is showing (not surprisingly) if you want people to respond, it’s best to address the emails individually. This makes sense, of course. It’s based on the same theory that’s popular in psychology called “bystander non-intervention”. When there is a group of people witnessing an event, each individual is less likely to help since they’re sure “someone else” will help.

What about Newsgroup
I wonder, if this theory is true then we should see less people responding to Newsgroup or distribution list postings!
Email vs newsgroups
Actually, most people are more likely to participate in email discussions than in newsgroup discussions (although I’m sure it varies depending on the group of people involved).
