Will Telecom Get Worse Before It Gets Better?

It’s tough to read any business news these days without reading about yet another telecom company in amazing amounts of trouble. Global Crossing, WorldCom, AT&T, Lucent, Qwest, XO. The list keeps getting longer and longer, and according to this NY Times article many people think it’s going to get worse before it gets any better. They point out that this isn’t a zero-sum game. When one company is losing business, it doesn’t mean that some other company is making up that lost money. It seems like no one is spending very much in the telecom world – across the board. The best thing, according to some, is the “rip the bandaid off” method of cleaning up a mess: just let as many companies fail as quickly as possible, sweep them out of the way, and then get back to business with the survivors.
