Wingcast Clipped

from the telematics-schmelematics dept

For years Ford and Qualcomm have been hyping up their OnStar competitor Wingcast. With a number of recent studies pointing out that for all the excitement over telematics, there’s (1) not much evidence that people want it and (2) that people certainly aren’t interested in paying for it, it appears that Ford has gotten cold feet. They’ve decided to pull out of Wingcast. Considering that they owned 85% of it, this means that Wingcast is no longer around. All that hype and effort, and no product ever released. Wingcast systems were scheduled to begin showing up in 2003 model cars.
