Fallout From The DMCA's Anti-Circumvention Provisions

from the who-cares-about-fair-use? dept

The EFF has done a great job pointing out all the ways in which the DMCA is a dangerous piece of legislation. Their latest is a report that clearly points out why the anti-circumvention provisions in the law have had bad side effects that are likely to cause more problems in the future. Specifically, the provisions were meant to stop people from breaking copy protection schemes. In reality, however, they’ve been used to “chill” free speech, prevent fair use, and impede competition and innovation. It would be nice if more than a single Congressperson realized what a dangerous law the DMCA is.
