Sputnik Launches

from the up-up-and-away dept

Over the past few weeks at various events I’ve gone to, I kept hearing random things about Sputnik whenever I’d mention Joltage or Boingo. It seems that Sputnik is the third of these attempts at creating some form of national WiFi ISP. And, like each of the other ones, Sputnik has their own business model. Instead of selling ISP services, they’re selling the equipment necessary to build your own gateway. Then, apparently, anyone can access those gateways for free. Seems like a cool idea – but now, when I travel anywhere, I suddenly have to check each of these websites (among others) to see if there’s any open WiFi hotspots where ever I go.
