No New Dot Com Behemoths

from the battle-over,-war-won dept

A Business Week article predicting that the battle to create big internet companies is over. The writer says that companies like Amazon.com, Yahoo, and eBay have won and it’s not possible that some new upstart will take them on. This seems a bit naive. There are very few companies that can hold a sustainable advantage for a while, and there are certainly areas where improvements could be made to any of those companies. Furthermore, in a world of technology advantages, surprising developments can come out of nowhere. It wasn’t that long ago, for instance, that everyone thought the search engine battle was over. Then along came Google… While I don’t doubt that the big dot coms will stick around for a while, I’d be surprised if there weren’t some new huge internet companies showing up in the next few years.
