Will WiFi Hurt 3G?

from the here-it-comes-again dept

This question keeps popping up in discussions here, and no one I know is all that confident in their answers. The question is will 802.11b (wifi) networks hurt 3G networks? Obviously (stop me if you’ve heard this before), the two systems are very different and are designed for different uses. It’s clear that each is much better at some things than the other. However, in the end, it’s clear that WiFi is cheap, simple, here now, and effective. It wouldn’t surprise me if people work on ways to make WiFi better and if we see it start to cut into some of the business that wireless carriers expected to be waiting for them when they finally get around to offering real 3G systems.
