What's Next For 1st And Ten Yard Creators
from the turning-TV-sports-into-video-gams dept
An interesting look at the company that created the famous “1st and 10” yard line used in football games. It’s the same company that created the famous “glowing puck” in hockey, and lots of other funky television sports graphics. Not everyone likes such things, but there’s plenty more coming. They’re using these graphics to try to keep the “younger generation” interested in watching sports – as opposed to actually (gasp) going outside and playing them themselves. There is actually a quote to that effect about keeping kids watching sports on TV rather than going out and snowboarding (what about those of us who rushed home from snowboarding just to watch the Super Bowl? It’s possible to do both. Really). In order to keep their interest, though, they have to add these video-game like graphics to the television coverage. I think some of them work better than others. Most people seem to love the yard line marker (which is really useful). However, their attempts to do things like the “K Zone” in baseball seem pretty useless.
