Exploding Silicon Chips
from the watch-out dept
Scientists are working on a way to explode silicon chips by sending an electronic signal to them. Am I the only one who thinks this sounds a bit scary? I don’t want a computer or a mobile phone that has the ability to easily blow up. However, potential uses are for remotely destroying stolen property: “Please step away, you thief. This phone is set to explode in 10 seconds… 9 seconds….”

Old hat
This is not new. A version of the 6502 (late 1970’s) microprocessor had a “halt and burn” instruction.
Basically current was run through a resistor causing enough heat to burn the silicon.
