Philips Takes On Copy Protected CDs

from the go-Philips dept

Coming out of a corner where it wasn’t expected, it turns out that consumer electronics giant Philips is not at all thrilled with copy protected CDs that the music labels are trying to put out. They’re now saying that such CDs should be required to be labeled as such, and that they should not be allowed to carry the ubiquitous “CD” label, since they’re inferior quality. They’re also working on a CD burner that is specifically designed to copy and burn protected CDs, and seem to have some sort of weird, convoluted logic about why that’s ok. Expect many lawsuits to follow. Update: Here’s the original Reuters article that the Register based their story on.
