The Geeks Who Saved Usenet

from the good-for-them dept

A good Salon article about (literally) the geeks who saved usenet. That is, the random folks out there who archived so many usenet posts from the past two decades which Google used to put together their extremely impressive (and often embarrassing) archive. The early archives were done because the archiver thought that some of the posts could be useful in the future, and not for historical reasons. Later archives were for distributing them to people who had slow modems on CD-ROM. Update: SF Gate has a different article talking about exactly the same thing.
