How The Goner Suspects Were Tracked Down

from the catching-the-virus-creators dept

A short article explaining how the four young writers of the Goner virus were tracked down (fairly quickly) last week. Since the virus made use of an IRC channel, the FBI monitored it for certain IRC nicknames that were found in the virus. They then tracked the IP addresses that people with those nicknames came from. Just a random reminder that it’s pretty damn tough to be anonymous online – which is a good thing when you’re trying to find idiot kids who are making a mess.
