AT&T SMS Doesn't Work Well

from the oops dept

A few weeks back we posted a story about AT&T Wireless allowing subscribers to send SMS text messages to people using mobile phone service from other carriers – suggesting this was a breakthrough in the U.S., where everything had been carrier specific. Turns out, the system doesn’t work very well, but that won’t stop AT&T from charging you for trying to send messages. In a series of tests, it was discovered that many messages simply didn’t reach their intended targets at all. Trying to commuicate with anyone on a Sprint PCS phone, for instance, was a waste of time (and money).
