California Sells Birth Data To Free Website

from the privacy-concerns-anyone? dept

While everyone’s talking about the various new laws that might affect our privacy, it appears we’ve missed things like our own government selling a database full of birth records to a free website. So, without much trouble you can pretty easily find the birthday and mother’s maiden name of people born here (or Texas). Luckily, I wasn’t born here, but I’m sure my data is available somewhere else as well. The website is a genealogy site, so I’m sure their intentions are good – but that doesn’t say anything about the people who will use it.
