Old Business Models Back In Style

You have to wonder where these people have been over the past few years. Here’s an article talking about how Vivendi thinks they’ve found the killer app to pay for online content. They’re going to use advertising across their network of sites instead of subscription fees. Um… Wait… I’ve heard this one before… Yeah, they’re basically trying to go with the same strategy that a ton of other companies failed to make money on for years. The article doesn’t seem to talk about the fact that the bottom dropped out of the online advertising market. In fact, the article doesn’t describe exactly what’s going on at all. They just seem to think that Vivendi Universal has a good idea by tying together their various properties into a “network” which they can sell advertising across. Good luck.

Agreed
It sounds exactly like what Disney wanted to do with all of its assets (ABC, ESPN, etc). The only tangible result is that the word “go” appears in the URL for all of those sites. Does that somehow turn a bunch of separate web sites into a “network?” Apparently not, since Disney has all but given up on their Internet group.
