VoiceStream Buys MobileStar
from the still-going... dept
On Friday there were a number of articles about how MobileStar’s network was suddenly and mysteriously turned back on, despite the fact that they had laid everyone off. Today we discover that VoiceStream Wireless wants to buy MobileStar (according to the registration required NY Times) and has dumped some money on them to keep the network running until a deal is finalized. It would be nice if services like MobileStar really did appear on a widespread scale, but I’m afraid that it’s going to be difficult to offer it cost effectively enough in a way that people will actually be willing to pay to use it. This is surprising
I’m surprised to see VS as the buyer. They have put so much into their GPRS roll out, this seems like a distraction. There isn’t a clear benefit for their existing user base, so they must see it as long term diversification move.
