Built To Change
from the focus-focus-focus dept
An interesting talk with the guy who wrote the book Built To Last near the beginning of the dot com craze – where he talks about what visionary companies do to stay there. Times have changed, but he still sticks by a lot of what he said then. He’s now coming out with a new book called Good to Great, which explains why some companies make it and others don’t. What he talks about in the interview is the importance of focusing on what you do best as a company and making sure that any changes you make help make that better. Everything else is a waste of time. He tends to think that two phases companies have gone through over the past five years (first their obsession with change, and now their obsession with “back to basics”) completely misses the point. In both cases they’re doing something for the sake of doing it – rather than doing it to actually help their company.
