Want To Know Who's Taking Prozac? Just Ask Eli Lilly
from the oops dept
Well, someone deserves to get fired for this one. Eli Lilly runs a site called Prozac.com, where takers of Prozac can sign up to have a daily reminder emailed to them – so they remember to take the pill. While the use of Prozac is fairly common, there is still (not surprisingly) something of a stigma attached to anyone who takes the anti-depression medicine. So, it’s probably not a good thing that someone at Eli Lilly sent out the daily email reminder revealing the email addresses of everyone else who takes Prozac. Now, that could make you depressed. In a situation like that, there’s simply no excuse for this happening. Anything that involves private issues, or medical information should involve a system that wouldn’t even allow such a thing as a possibility.

Sounds like User Error
The news story cites Lilly calling it a “programming error”, but it sounds like someone forgot to use the BCC field in their mail client. Duh…
Re: Sounds like User Error
Yeah, that’s a pretty stupid move. However, what the hell are they doing using a bcc field for a mailing list anyway? A company like that should at least have some mailing list software.
