SMS A Taxi
from the easy-way-to-thumb-a-cab dept
What is it about taxis that make them the perfect vehicle (in multiple ways) for mobile phone based apps? Now, in Ireland, you’ll soon be able to hail a cab by using SMS text messaging from your phone. It will send the request to the nearest cabbie (they say they’re using some triangulation scheme to figure out who’s closest) who will then call your mobile to let you know they’re coming. This probably gives the cab company offering this a bit of an advantage… until all the other cab companies join in.

No chance
Of course, the deliver time for an SMS message is “any time within the next 72 hours” which is not particularly useful if you want a taxi now. (Yes, most text messages arrive straight away, but some of them (and it is not a small proportion) can take a very long time.

Not to mention he is launching with 2 (two!) taxis for a city with a population of 1m.
Of course given Dublin’s taxi service 72 hours might be considered an improvement.
