3G Is Today's HDTV

from the lots-of-hype,-little-substance dept

A good article making the analogy that all this hype about 3G wireless reminds them of the similar hype from years ago concerning HDTV. People talked about how wonderful HDTV was going to be – and how much better it was than current television. Of course, there was no actual consumer demand for HDTV. Most people were just fine with TV as is. The article also compares the “middle step” solutions of each technology. Wireless providers are going for 2.5G as a stepping stone to 3G – though more and more people believe it’s going to be quite a long stepping stone. In the same way, cable providers started offering digital cable as an interim step to HDTV.
