Pet Dot Com Post Mortem

from the dead-dead-dead dept

Well, it seems a little late for this sort of article, but it’s a review of everything that went wrong in the pet dot com space. There are some pretty funny quotes – mostly from people who were involved in the pet space and who don’t want to comment at all. I have no sympathy for these people. Back in mid-1999, before this whole mess crashed and burned, we at Techdirt pointed out how stupid all these pet stores were. Specifically, I have absolutely no sympathy for the woman from Petopia who claimed their “competitive advantage” was simply that they had raised more money. Of course, that advantage barely lasted a month. In this article she complains that she was “burned by reporters” and she didn’t think that anyone cared about the pet space. She’s wrong. I care that people remember how stupid a bunch of people acted when they thought they were smarter than everyone else.
