Former Drug Czar Goes Dot Com
from the that's-so-1999 dept
An interesting look from Salon about former U.S. Drug Czar Gen. Barry McCaffrey joing a dot com. The dot com apparently wants to sell you your very own web-based treatment program for drug and alcohol addiction. They don’t explain why this will be any better than the free twelve step program you can receive at your local Narcotics or Alcoholics Anonymous (which also doesn’t leave you quivering alone at home staring at a computer screen to deal with your problems), but that doesn’t seem to matter to them. The article also points out that many of the people who have been involved in government efforts to stamp out drugs have later profited quite a bit from those very same drug addicts by working for drug testing consultantcies or other similar operations.

Actually, this is not too surprising since the only people who appear to be profiting from the Drug War are those who claim to be against drugs. Nobody ever mentions all the money, for example, that goes into advertising campaigns or police departments. I think that’s where the real money is being made.
