A Martyr? Student Suspended For Hacking Commits Suicide

from the tragic dept

Ron Morris writes “A student suspended for 10 days for hacking a school computer commits suicide. We finally have a martyr…”. This is absolutely tragic. The kid was only 13 years-old and had a long life in front of him. I don’t think he’s a martyr. It’s not as if he died in the line of duty. It sounds as though he was a typical teenager, full of promise, but also dealing with growing up in his own way – which always leads to struggles. It’s just extremely unfortunate how things ended up. While it may be useful to discuss the downsides to extreme punishments, I think that making the kid a “martyr” only will do more harm than good.
