John Markoff's Hacker Cred

from the looking-backwards dept

John Markoff, the NY Times reporter that many folks think thrives on inaccurate stories about hackers and other computer related subjects, has an article commemorating his first PC purchase 20 years ago. He uses the article to try to prove to the world that he has some credibility since he’s been using computers for all this time, and knows some of the history of PCs. He even mentions the Homebrew Computer Club – as if to gain some hacker credibility. However, by the time he got to town, he, instead, was hanging out at the Silicon Valley Computer Club with all the IBM-types in button downs. Still, a little nostalgia can be nice. He also seems to have found his 20 year-old PC. Perhaps he should have looked into ways to recycle it by now.
