The 3D Web Is Back

from the try,-try-again dept

If at first you don’t succeed, because nobody really cares about the technology, why not try again? Now big companies like Macromedia and Intel are going hype crazy about making the web 3D. Um, I remember this story. I remember when VRML was the next big thing five years ago. Then people realized that surfing the web in 2D was just fine.

5 years ago? I got into VRML about 9 years ago. It was WAY
before its time. I’ve always thought it was one of the best
written 3D formats, and still do.
It was just way too much to soon. Progammers could do
really awesome stuff with it but it looked bad.
On the other hand artist could make it look great but it
wouldn’t do anything and frame rates were choppy because
the artist didn’t know how to optimize the files.
There wasn’t many technical artist back then, nor was there
many programer + artist teams that worked together like
there are today.
I’ve had the opportunity to work with both programmers and
artist on projects that really pushed VRML to do great things.
